What’s the greatest gift someone could give you ?

If a human life could be saved through mine, that’d be the greatest Gift a person could give me, because nothing else in this life is permanent. We may have 206 bones and some tendon/ flesh on it, but shut our eyes and we are that inner life where spirit, soul meet bone marrow.

I saw a dear person go into that other realm, and in that moment I saw Death as serious evidence of Eternity. See, where did our friend M. Oerish go? Where’d all their laughter and capacity to love just go?

M.Oerish talked about life after death, and all the kinds of redemption she would try, from rolling in stone floors, ribbons tied in tall trees, offerings to trees, offering in brass vessels, in rivers, she did penance in mountain steps, in oil baths and holy basil …then she asks what I’m praying in my dawns, and I tell her all of my convos with the Creator. She could’ve said, “Ugh ..You’re not in my realm, chee.” M.Oerish said nothing, but her well wrinkled face broke into grins. She grabbed the pages of Bible we’d photocopied earlier.

Later she said she found her peace. Nah she was faking nothing. Peace ran like liquid prayers down her cheeks. You don’t always need words. The real thing will wear your skin with your permit or not. It will soothe a sore back or ankle even if it hurts like hell. Even if you got no news from your family miles a way and you’re alone in a home for the unwanted old. M.Oerish hugged the Word* to her heart and wore it in her sleeves and heart so loud you could hear her sing in the silence that filled her room as she left this world for the other.

The greatest gift she gave me, was that look in her eyes that saw through my fragile words, into a Freedom that was hers. “Sweet Jesus..” She said soft.

That’s the greatest gift anyone could give me – a Soul in Eternity that I will meet someday and they say, “Thanks Ray for telling me about Jesus…”
